Meet John Messler

I hold an undergraduate degree from Eastern Connecticut State University and a Master’s Degree from Husson University, and have worked in the healthcare and insurance industries for over 30 years. My expertise as an agent comes from my previous work in the home health sector, as well as my personal experience helping older family members navigate the complexities of Medicare. I understand that choosing a health insurance plan is a big decision that must take into account individual health needs and budget, while minimizing risk and exposure from an illness or accident.

I’m a former school board member and youth sports coach, and have served as a volunteer for New Hampshire Special Olympics. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my three amazing daughters, indulging my longtime passion for sailing, and my new passion for pickleball. I am a former golf instructor who persists in the unending battle to improve my game.

Healthcare Plan FAQs

  • Medicare is a federal health insurance program designed primarily for people aged 65 and older, though younger people with certain disabilities or qualifying conditions may also be eligible. Medicare provides coverage for a range of medical services, including hospital stays, doctor visits, prescription drugs, and preventative care.

Medicare offers several plans tailored to different aspects of healthcare. Original Medicare (Parts A and B) covers hospital stays and outpatient services but may leave gaps in coverage. Medicare Part D offers standalone prescription drug coverage. Medicare Advantage (Part C) combines Parts A, B, and often D into one plan, and may include additional benefits like dental and vision. Supplemental (Medigap) plans help cover out-of-pocket costs not paid by Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage and Supplemental plans are offered by private insurers. Each plan has varying costs, coverage networks, and benefits, allowing you to choose the option best suited to your healthcare needs and budget.

  • People aged 26 to 64 may be looking for health insurance plans if they have been laid off, are self-employed, or are recently retired and need bridge coverage until they turn 65 and can apply for Medicare.

Individual health plans provide comprehensive coverage outside of employer-sponsored or government programs like Medicare. Offered by private insurers, these plans typically include essential health benefits like hospitalization, doctor visits, preventive care, and prescription drugs. They come in various forms, including Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), and High Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs) with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). Premiums, deductibles, and coverage options vary, allowing you to select the best plan for your healthcare needs and budget.

  • Small group health plans provide employee coverage for businesses with fewer than 50 people. These plans typically provide essential benefits like hospitalization, doctor visits, prescription drugs, and preventive care. Options include Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), and Point of Service (POS) plans. Employers often share costs with employees, and premiums can vary based on factors like location and age of employees. Because costs are pooled, small group plans may offer more negotiating power and stable premiums compared to individual plans.

While I don’t work with businesses for Group and Large Group Health, I’m happy to refer you to one of my colleagues if you are with a business with more than 50 people.

  • Vision and dental plans provide coverage specifically for eye and dental care needs. Vision plans typically cover services like routine eye exams, eyeglasses, and contact lenses, while dental plans usually cover preventive care and basic procedures like fillings and may cover major services like root canals or crowns. These plans can be offered as standalone policies or as part of a comprehensive health insurance package. Your level of coverage, provider networks and cost-sharing arrangements vary depending on the plan.

  • Life insurance provides financial protection for individuals and their families in the event of the insured's death. Personal life insurance policies offer coverage for an individual, providing a lump-sum payment (the death benefit) to beneficiaries upon the insured's death. Family life insurance covers multiple family members under a single policy, often at a more affordable rate than individual policies for each family member. Your policy options include term life (providing coverage for a specified period) or permanent life (providing coverage for the insured's lifetime), and premiums vary based on factors like your age, health, and coverage amount.

  • Business life insurance provides financial protection for businesses in the event of the death of a key employee or owner. Key person insurance compensates the company for the financial loss incurred due to the death of a vital employee, covering costs like recruitment and training of a replacement. Business continuation insurance, such as buy-sell agreements funded by life insurance, ensures the smooth transition of ownership in the event of an owner's death, providing funds to allow the surviving owners to buy out the deceased owner's share. Premiums are based on factors like the insured's role, age, and coverage amount.

  • Long-term care (LTC) insurance offers coverage for expenses associated with extended care due to aging, chronic illness, or disability. LTC insurance provides peace of mind by ensuring access to long-term care without exhausting savings or assets. Policies typically cover services like nursing home care, assisted living, and in-home care. They help alleviate the financial burden of long-term care costs, which can be substantial and are often not covered by health insurance or Medicare. Premiums are based on factors like age, health, coverage options, and benefit amounts.

  • Disability insurance provides financial stability if you’re unable to work due to illness or injury. It replaces a portion of lost income, helping to cover expenses like mortgage payments, groceries, and medical bills. Short-term disability insurance typically covers disabilities lasting a few months, while long-term insurance provides coverage for disabilities lasting several years or more. Premiums are based on factors like your age, occupation, health, and coverage amount.
